Prevention and control of banana nematodes
Banana root nematodes are microscopic worms that feed on plant roots, causing pre mature death hence reducing water and nutrient uptake. Nematodes are identified by rooting of plant roots, falling of plants during strong winds, reduced bunch sizes. East African highland banana are susceptible to nematodes. The most damaging nematodes are Radopholus similis, Helicotylenchus spp, […]

Soil fertility management in banana plantations
Poor soil fertility leads to soil nutrient deficiency problems in plants. After diagnosis of the deficiency symptoms, organic and inorganic fertilisers can be used to restore the soil fertility. Nitrogen as a plant nutrient is vital for chlorophyl production, DNA and protein synthesis. Phosphorous helps in root growth, flower and seed formation while potassium helps […]

Intercropping banana with beans using zero tillage
Zero tillage has many advantages in banana plantations and is achieved by mulching of the plantation. Intercrops like beans can also be planted without removing the mulch. Mulch is rich in nutrients particularly potassium. Mulching a plantation with grasses or crop residues at 2cm can add up to 300kg/ ha of potassium but incase mulch […]

    Macro propagation of banana plantlets
Macro propagation technology is a means to produce clean banana plantlets in a 2 to 4 months‘ period provided the suckers are got from healthy plants and contamination avoided in the process.
